The seminar on qualitative methodology for advanced psychology students and doctoral researchers from related fields will consist of 4 sessions (2 lectures and 2 workshops) and cover various topics related to designing and performing a qualitative study.
The initial session will introduce the qualitative approach and explain its epistemological and methodological specificities. We will discuss what constitutes a qualitative study – what settings, types of data, research skills and ethical obligations does it entail? In the next session, we will delve into qualitative study design, introducing sampling strategies and comparing prominent methods of data collection/generation by highlighting their advantages and challenges.
The following two workshop sessions will centre on the logic and practical steps of qualitative analysis, illustrated using concrete research examples that will be analysed with the participants. They will also be introduced to the use of software for qualitative analysis, focusing on the basic structure and functions of a particular QDA software. Finally, some prominent approaches to analysis and interpretation in qualitative research will be briefly discussed and compared.
Participants, whether they are in the process of developing qualitative or mixed methods research projects or are already engaged in them, will also have the opportunity to discuss their projects and any methodological challenges they may encounter, either during or after the seminar.

Dr. Biljana Stanković is Assistant Professor of Qualitative Methodology at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Philosophy. Her research encompasses various qualitative approaches, focusing on the intersection of health and social psychology and trying to integrate theoretical perspectives from cultural-historical psychology, phenomenology and STS. Her research interests include: female embodiment and reproductive experiences, institutional aspects of medical care, social trauma, historical narratives, experiences of people living with severe mental illness. She works with diverse samples that include all age groups and both general and marginalised populations, such as transgender individuals, psychiatric users, and refugees. Currently, she is finalising a book on the embodied and technologically mediated aspects of the early transition to motherhood (to be published by Palgrave/Springer later this year). She is also experienced in supervising students at various academic levels, guiding them in qualitative research on a wide range of psychological topics using a variety of qualitative approaches.
