Step 1: Find a supervisor and decide on a dissertation topic
The first step is to decide on a dissertation topic, but you will also have to find a supervisor who will support you in your research.
Information and orientation in this decision process can be found under Preparation for your doctoral studies.
Step 2: Fill out necessary forms and prepare required documents

- Proof of completed studies (e.g. graduation certificate)
- List of theof courses attended during the preliminary studies
- Language certificate (for all non-Austrians - further information can be found here)
- Form: Admission to doctoral studies/admission to doctoral school
- Supervision agreement

You will be informed during the application process should further documents be required for the application (e.g. change of name, inquiries about the final thesis of your previous studies, etc.).
International applicants might have to provide legalization for their official documents. Further information can be found here.
Step 3: Online application
The application for admission to a doctoral program is made in UNIGRAZonline.
Applicants with an active UNIGRAZonline account can submit their application directly via their personal homepage in UNIGRAZonline under "My applications".
Applicants who are applying to study at the University of Graz for the first time must first create a basic account. You can then use the basic account to create an application for your degree program.
ATTENTION: Once the application process is started, the progress made in the online application tool cannot be saved temporarily.
After the online application
You will be informed during the application process should any documents be missing or incorrect.
Depending on the complexity of the application, the review process may take several weeks.
You will be informed by e-mail if your application is accepted. In this e-mail, you will also be asked to submit the application for enrolment.
You can find the application for enrolment in your UNIGRAZonline applicant account. Download the application for enrolment under "My applications" in the "Show application status" column. Then check whether the information on the form is correct, sign the application and send it by e-mail to studienabteilung(at)uni-graz.at.
The final steps for enrolment can only be completed once the signed application for enrolment has been received.
If the application for enrolment is received outside the admission deadline, enrolment for the semester in question is not possible.
You will then receive the data for payment of the tuition/ ÖH fee, which will be sent to you by e-mail.
As soon as the tuition fee/student union fee has been credited to your tuition fee account (approx. 3-5 working days depending on your bank), your registration for the current semester will be completed. You will then receive a PIN code to activate UNIGRAZonline by e-mail.
You can then activate your UNIGRAZonline account as a student on the UNIGRAZonline homepage at https://online.uni-graz.at . To do this, enter the PIN code, your matriculation number and your date of birth. The system will then automatically assign you your e-mail address and, once you have set a password, your personal account in UNIGRAZonline will be activated.
Please make sure you remember your account details (e-mail address and password), as these are required every time you log in to UNIGRAZonline. The PIN code is only to be used when logging in for the first time.
