The interdisciplinary doctoral programme Antiquity and Modernity in a European Context explores and analyzes the relationships of individuals and groups to their social, material and transcendental world in ancient and modern European social systems. Doctoral candidates are qualified to deal academically with these sociological, philosophical, political science and theological/religious issues in European cultures and societies and those that are or were closely related to Europe. Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches and working methods are required to analyze these interdisciplinary fields of research and issues. The doctoral training therefore combines theology, philosophy, religious, social, legal, political, linguistic, literary, cultural and ancient studies and interweaves both their methods and theories. Doctoral researchers are thus trained to become multipliers of socially relevant topics such as "tradition", "memory", "modernity", "individualization", "religion" and "culture" with historical depth of focus.
